When I first started out as a social media guru my plans didn’t exist. I had no idea where I was going with this business. Now mind you I’ve been setting goals all my life but in 2018, I started a brand-new business that I wasn’t clear on yet. I didn’t even know all the things I was going to have to learn in order to be able to make money as a social media manager.

It wasn’t until I put my plan of action in place to create what I’m doing today as well as what I’ll be doing in the next three years. I started this social media business at 54 years old I’m so glad I did otherwise I would be like everyone else trying to navigate my way through this pandemic. I feel like God prepared me for these times we’re in right now.

I wouldn’t be where I am if I hadn’t created a plan to get me here

The world would have another lost soul without my plan of action I want to share how I create my 5-year plan in 30 min. There is a saying that says:

“A man without vision will perish”

I get asked the questions “where do you see yourself in 5 years” by mentors I’ve had in the past. This is a question I often ask myself throughout the years when I evaluate where I am and where I want to be in the next 5 years.

I ask my coaching clients this question and the most common answer I get is “I don’t know.”

The reality is we really don’t know what we’ll be doing exactly in 5 years but the point of the question isn’t to trip you up. The point of the question is to get you thinking about your life and where you really want to be in 5 years. So many people let their life lead them instead of them leading their life, don’t be that person.

There are 4 main areas in your life that I recommend that we need to create a plan for:

Personal

Financial

Relationship

Business

Your goals may coincide with one another for instance, working on your business plan may also be a plan that’s able to hit the financial plan also. One important thing to think about while creating your plan is that you don’t want to create competing commitments meaning, that if financial goal is to save a certain amount of money for retirement and your personal goal is to buy a new Lamborghini, ask yourself, is this a realistic goal or is this a competing commitment?

My Reasoning for creating this post is so that people can create a BIG picture idea and start creating their best life plan.

There are so many people in the world that lack direction and I don’t want that to be you. A plan gives you direction and that’s something we all need in our lives.

“A dream without a plan is just a wish”

Start with a big picture idea and then break it down into steps

Step 1: Brain Dump

Once, you know the goal you want to achieve then do a brain dump. Think of all the ways that are possible for you to achieve this specific goal?

Step 2: Decide Is It Going to Take

Money

Time

Discipline

Skill

Step 3: What Comes First?

In the first year you may need to come up with the money it’s going to take to get you closer to your goal this could be your first year plan. You may need to create the time so that you can achieve this goal. In the first year I suggest you write out your plan what is it you need to do to get you closer to your goal?

If it’s discipline or skill then map out the plan to get you closer to your goal in these areas. Whatever area you need to start with create that plan for your first year and then follow suit with the remaining four years. With this new direction my hope is that you’ll make strides in your life goals and achievements.

Get your plan mapped and start taking action on that right away. Do this year by year until you have your 5-year plan in 30 minutes done depending on how clear you on your goal this could take more or less time to build out. But it gets easier the more you get accustomed to creating a 5-Year Plan.

Creating a 5-year plan is a way for you to achieve the big picture idea of your future.

I want to tell you a story about my son Justin

Justin joined the Marines when he was 18 years old (against my wishes) so that he could give himself a head start on his life. He wanted direction, and he wanted to go to a good college. He had a 5-year plan. His plan was to stay in the Military for a 4-year term and then move to a state with a good school and utilize his G.I. bill.

He worked his plan and got out of the Marines in March of 2019. Justin moved to Colorado where he’s going to a private school to become an accountant. He started his second 5-year plan at 24 years old. Justin realizes at a very early age that to be where you desire to be in 5 years’ time and to become who you want to become you need to create a plan to get you there.

Why a Need To Create A Five-Year Plan

I believe that If we don’t have a plan then we are letting our lives lead us and not use leading our lives. That’s why I recommend coming up with a five-year plan, we won’t move in a direction toward whom we want to become or get the things we want in life if we don’t have a plan to go that way.

This is really important to you and to those that depend on you. You’ll literally stay right where you are today and you’ll repeat the past over and over again and again. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.

The big result is an unsatisfying life always reaching for something without direction.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Using S.M.A.R.T. Goals is a guide to tell if your goals are realistic and achievable. This is a one way I personally used to decide if my goals are realistic or if I need to rethink them a little more. Peter Drucker came up with this set of objectives and it works beautifully.

The acronym for S.M.A.R.T. Goals is:

SPECIFIC
Ex: I want to Lose weight is not specific

MEASURABLE
Ex: I want to lose 25 pounds (ca. 11 kg) is specific and measurable

ACHIEVABLE
Ex: Yes or No this is for you to answer

REALISTIC
Ex: Is this something you can really achieve in the time frame you want to lose it by?

TIME-BOUND
Ex: I want to lose 25 pounds (ca. 11 kg) in three months
